Description

Created with an Indigenous Advisory Team, Take Action for Reconciliation helps teachers and students learn about Indigenous communities across Canada, the need for reconciliation, and the actions people are taking to make a difference. Through these examples, students will realize that they too can have an impact and work towards reconciliation. This resource includes four magazine-style Student Books, accompanying Teacher Guides, and a Companion website.

The Student Books are inquiry-based and focus on Indigenous cultures, languages, and worldviews. They include:
• Indigenous voices and perspectives throughout
• Contemporary stories and historical truths
• Examples of actions people have taken to work towards reconciliation
• Quotes by Indigenous leaders and Elders highlighting ideas and/or issues
• Engaging texts with a range of reading levels
• Variety of text forms, such as infographics, articles, profiles, comics, interviews, and descriptions
• Non-fiction features, such as photos, captions, maps, and labels
• Gradual progression from one magazine to the next, with more challenging subject matter and language

The 80-page Teacher's Guide for each title includes:
• Background information in preparing to teach the unit
• Lesson Plans for each selection in the Student Book with background information about the selection (e.g. the history, perspectives, and culture), prompts for connecting to the final project at various points in the unit, and questions to deconstruct the text on the page and reconstruct meaning

Additional teaching supports are available on the Companion Website, including assessment and links to recommended resources such as websites, maps, books, and videos.
