Eight-year-old Irene and her two brothers are forced to leave their family and attend a residential school far from home. It's the law! In this austere place, they are forbidden to speak their language and given a number instead of a name. At the end of the school year, the children return home and tell their parents about the appalling conditions they endure at the residential school. Will they find a way to hide the children so they never have to go back?
Inspired by the life of Jenny Kay Dupuis's grandmother, I Am Not a Number sheds light on a dark chapter of Canadian history in a way that raises awareness among children and allows them to learn a valuable human and historical lesson.
