Morgan and Eli, two Indigenous children forced to leave their families and communities, are reunited in a foster home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They feel disconnected from their culture, as well as from each other, and struggle to fit in at school and in their new home… until they discover a secret place, walled up in an unfinished attic bedroom.
A portal opens onto another reality, Askí, leading them to a frozen, barren land where they meet an Ochek (a fisherman). The sole hunter providing for his starving community, Misewa, the Ochek takes in the human children and teaches them traditional survival skills.
As the need for food becomes increasingly desperate, they embark on a perilous journey. Accompanied by Arik, an insolent squirrel they caught stealing on the hunting line, they try to save Misewa before winter comes and freezes everything, including them.
